Paul Robinson is convinced Tottenham can break the stranglehold of the big four, provided they retain the services of star striker Dimitar Berbatov.
Spurs fell short in the Premiership this season, as Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal held sway once again.
The North Londoners did show some real quality and England keeper Robinson feels they are close to mounting a title challenge.
"At the moment, the way the game is at the moment, we are the best of the rest and it is up to teams like ourselves, Everton, Bolton who are finishing fifth, sixth and seventh to try and break into the top four to try and break the mould," Robinson told the website.
Berbatov has shone in his first season in the Premiership and is being linked with a move to Manchester United.
Robinson is aware of the transfer talk, but has urged Spurs to fight to retain the services of the Bulgarian marksman.
"I don't think we are far off; we have got to keep hold of the players we have got," added Robinson. "There is speculation about one of our players, it is important we keep him and make a couple of additions and then I don't think we are far off from breaking in.
"He (Berbatov) is very good, very special. He is naturally gifted and a natural goalscorer.
"He is high quality and has done wonderfully this year."

They better emerge next year better than this season. Jol spent too much money and i don't see any success in terms of achieving silverware.
