Manchester United are reportedly set to bid £8million for Bolton striker Nicolas Anelka as they bid to strengthen their forward line.Owen Hargreaves has completed his move to Old Trafford from Bayern Munich for a fee of around £17million, while deals have been agreed for Anderson from Porto and Sporting Lisbon's Nani and now newspaper reports claim Sir Alex Ferguson will take his summer spending to almost £60million with a swoop for Anelka.
The Frenchman moved to the Reebok Stadium a year ago from Fenerbahce and enjoyed a productive season, scoring 13 goals despite a slow start.
United have been linked with a host of top strikers including Fernando Torres, Dimitar Berbatov and Samuel Eto'o but the Daily Mirror claims the £50million spent already this summer means Ferguson has had to set his sights lower.
Anelka has already played for four other Premiership clubs, moving from Paris St Germain to Arsenal in 1996 before playing for Liverpool and Manchester City. -

Lee keen to do Anelka swap deal with United
Bolton boss Sammy Lee has told his board that he is happy to listen to offers from Manchester United for striker Nicolas Anelka. United chief executive David Gill met Bolton representatives this week to underline the Premiership championsÂ’ interest in the 28-year-old France forward.
Lee has told his chairman Phil Gartside that he would be happy to do a player-plus-cash deal with United. The Bolton boss is interested in striker Alan Smith and midfielder Kieran Richardson. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson hopes to find the cash to lure Samuel EtoÂ’o from Barcelona, but is tracking Anelka as a secondary target. -
