England internationals have agreed to donate their match fees leading up to the 2010 World Cup to charity. The gesture, which should go a long way to reducing the notion that modern players are greedy, is expected to raise around £1million for charitable causes.
The likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard, Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard are all on board as The Three Lions do their bit to raise much-needed funds.
Among the charities set to benefit are the Association of Children's Hospices, WellChild, the Bobby Moore Fund for cancer research and the Professional Footballers Association Charity Initiatives.
Terry and other member of England's squad are already involved in charitable causes and the Chelsea defender is delighted to do all he can to help.
"Every player in the England squad already works in some way with charities, local or national - and every player to a man is looking forward to supporting our charity," he told The Mirror.
Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick added: "I'm obviously very happy that the whole squad has taken this initiative and will distribute funds across a deserving range of charities.
"It puts an extra kick into them appearing for their country."
