Premiership - Melchiot to sign for Wigan
Premiership - One year after having left Birmingham, Dutch defender Mario Melchiot is on the verge of making a return to England with Wigan. The 30-year-old has left Ligue 1 side Rennes after deciding not to extend his one-year contract.
According to the Daily Mirror, Melchiot was at the JJB Stadium on Tuesday to prove his fitness to new manager Chris Hutchings and agreed to sign a one-year deal.
"Mario will not continue with us," Rennes coach Pierre Dreossi confirmed in Ouest France. "He will take a different course."
The former Chelsea player left Birmingham last summer and impressed during his brief spell at Rennes, making 30 appearances and scoring twice as his club went on to finish fourth this year.
He will become Hutchings' third signing of the close season, after Titus Bramble and Antoine Sibierski.
