The former England coach has been approached to take charge at City after Claudio Ranieri joined Juventus and Juande Ramos decided to stay with Sevilla.
But his appointment will depend on former Thai prime minister Shinawatra finally sealing a deal to buy the Blues. The buy-out seemed doomed when Shinawatra had £1.4billion of assets frozen by the military government that deposed him.
But negotiations between City and his advisers have continued, with one source last night saying talks were "much more positive than a few days ago".
Eriksson, 59, has been out of managment since England's bid for the World Cup ended in failure 12 months ago. His appointment by City is likely to provoke a backlash from fans who remember England's timid exit.
But he has a good club record, with successful spells at Gothenburg, Benfica, Roma, Fiorentina, Sampdoria and Lazio.
