Middlesbrough are the latest Premier League club to be linked with a summer swoop for Manchester United striker Alan Smith. The England striker's Old Trafford future appears to be in some doubt with the new Premier League champions yet to offer him a new contract.
And according to the Evening Gazzette in Middlesbrough, Gareth Southgate has asked United about his availability.
Sir Alex Ferguson has already splashed the cash this summer to sign Anderson, Nani and Owen Hargreaves.
And he is reportedly looking for a new striker, which would throw extra doubt on Smith's future.
Only last week the former Leeds man, bought for £7million in the summer of 2004, said he would "consider his options" unless he was given assurances over his role at Old Trafford.
And his agent Alex Black asked United to clarify his client's position.
Black said: "I think if you're definitely not wanted, you need to be told that."

I think Boro will get their man. But if they think Smith is Viduka then i think they better reconsider their options.
