Manchester United's Alan Smith is set to sign for Newcastle United after Sam Allardyce reportedly won the race for his signature.
The former Leeds United star, who has been used in midfield as well as in attack during his career, has expressed a desire to remain with United, but it now looks as if he will be moving North to St James' Park.
Smith's United career suffered from an horrific leg break during a match against Liverpool, which kept him out for close to a year, but he fought back bravely and played his part in the closing stages of United's Premiership winning season.
He has attacted interest from Aston Villa and Tottenham, but it seems Newcastle have won the race to sign Smith for around £4m.
The prospect of a midfield duo of Smith and Joey Barton will ensure United will not be seen as a soft touch next season.
