Adriano Galliani has confirmed that Milan are looking to bring in a top striker before the start of the new season.
Milan had hoped to sign David Suazo from Cagliari but lost out after a protracted tug-of-war with Internazionale.
The Rossoneri were also interested in Thierry Henry before he decided to join Barcelona, but Galliani admits they could not have afforded to pay the Frenchman's wages.
"It would not have been difficult to pay €24million (£16million) to Arsenal, but the player's €10million (£6.7million) salary for us was not sustainable," Galliani told Gazzetta dello Sport.
"Now we will work to find a striker. The market is long and we will move slowly, but it's clear that for the new arrival the only sacrifice will be (Ricardo) Oliveira.
"I don't do names. There is time until the end of August and we will take all of this to make the right choice."
Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o has been linked with Milan and Galliani remains determined to sign him.
However, Galliani is remaining realistic about Milan's chances of getting the Cameroonian.
He explained: "For the moment he's not transferable and he says he wants to stay at Barcelona.
"But Eto'o is at the top of our list, I've never hidden it."
