Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp is hoping to land Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele in a cut-price £2million deal.
The France ace is in the final year of his contract and has been linked with Paris St Germain and Villarreal, having been told his chances of first-team football will be limited next season.
Redknapp is on the lookout for players to strengthen his squad and has already snapped up Sulley Muntari for a fee of around £7million as well as defenders Sylvain Distin and Hermann Hreidarsson on free transfers.
Redknapp told the Daily Mirror: "We could do a lot worse than sign Makelele. If he was available I'd love to have him in my team."
The tabloid claims the Frenchman, a World Cup and Champions League winner, could cost as little as £2million although he would have to take a significant cut in his £70,000 a-week wage packet should he move to Fratton Park.
