With Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez speaking yesterday of his need for wingers, Australian Harry Kewell has made it clear that, after injuries wrecked his first four years on Merseyside, he is determined to fight his way back onto the Reds' left flank.
Kewell, now fully fit, is raring to prove himsel at Anfield. He told The Daily Star that his objective to earn himself a new Liverpool contract.
"I'll be giving it my all, fighting for a new deal," he tol the newspaper.
And he was at pains to underline how much he has appreciated the support he's received from Benitez during his injury-disrupted Anfield career.
Kewell said: "I really owe the manager, Rafa Benitez. He's been a massive fan of mine and I want to repay the faith he's shown in me."
Because of injuries, he has been restricted to 123 appearances in all competitions since joining Liverpool from Leeds United in 2003.
The left-winger added: "It's been a difficult time for me with all the injuries. The fans have been frustrated with me and I've been just as frustrated with myself.
"I am feeling good now, totally recovered and I'm planning a big season.
"I'd like to be with a great club like Liverpool as long as I can. If I get my wish great, but you can't put all your eggs in one basket."
