Real Madrid are hoping to beat Chelsea to the signing of Real Murcia star Pedro León and have lodged a bid of €1m as an opening gambit.
The 20-year-old midfielder was instrumental in helping his side win promotion to the top flight last term and that did not go unnoticed by Madrid's new technical team.
Madrid are ready to offer the Spain Under-21 international a four-year contract and want to relate the transfer fee to his performances.
Levante have also enquired about the player's availability and are said to have made a higher bid than madrid and offered León a better contract.
León has a buy-out clause of €5m and Real Murcia are said to be keen to see any suitors meet that price before negotiations will take place.
Miguel ngel Portugal recently returned to Madrid as technical secretary and he and Predrag Mijatovic want to bring in a strong of young Spanish players.
While León has still to prove himself at the highest level, Portugal believes that he has enormous potential.
If Madrid are successful in their bid, then they are also considering loaning him back to Real Murcia for one year.
