Villa move for £7m Mertesacker

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill is considering a move for Werder Bremen's £7million-rated Germany star Per Mertesacker as he continues his search for a central defender.
O'Neill has been looking for a new centre half all summer but his search has so far drawn a blank.
His pursuit of West Bromwich Albion's Curtis Davies is ongoing but Villa have not been able to agree a fee for the 22-year-old.
Mertesacker, 22, was first capped at 19. He moved to Werder Bremen a year ago from Hanover. -

ah. he'll prove a very good buy. he's 1.93m tall, good strength on the ball, physical, tough-tackling, excellent header of the ball and comfortable with the ball at his feet. He'll be a real rock in defence. and with the ever-solid olof melberg beside him, villa has a new-look solid defence.

Mertesacker talk rejected
The defender's agent Roman Pletz has admitted there has been interest in the player, but ruled out the prospect of Mertesacker leaving Bremen in the immediate future.
"At the moment it is not possible for Per to leave," Pletz told skysports.com.
"He is under contract until 2010 and he is a very important player for Werder Bremen.
"There has been interest in Per since the last World Cup, with English clubs watching him
"Aston Villa is a big club, but Per is happy at Bremen and he will stay at Bremen this year."
