Everton's supporters have backed the planned move away from Goodison Park to a site just outside the Liverpool boundary in Kirkby.
Various supporter groups have contested the plans, which prompted the club to stage a ballot of 36,000 fans and the result of the vote has been announced today showing that the majority of fans support the proposed move.
The vote revealed on the club website showed 59.27% of fans voted in favour of the move, with 40.73% saying no, which has come as a surprise to analysts, which expected the vote to much closer.
If more than 50% of voters had rejected the scheme to build a 50,000-seater stadium in Kirkby, in conjunction with Tesco, they would have had to start searching for a new site.
A previously planned move to a new stadium in Kings Dock collapsed three years ago, while it has been deemed impossible to sufficiently expand their long-term home Goodison Park.
Everton will be following Merseyside rivlas Liverpool in making the switch to a new stadium as the Reds are off to a complex at Stanley Park.
