Premier League supremo Dave Richards stormed out of a meeting after UEFA insisted they want the FA Cup winners in the Champions League.
UEFA president Michel Platini believes the fourth Premier League place should be sacrificed in two yearsÂ’ time in a bid to revive the most famous cup competition in the world.
But chairman Richards, who is also on UEFAÂ’s Professional Football Strategy Council, was visibly angry at the idea.
Platini said: “The FA Cup is one of the greatest competitions and the winner really deserves to be in the Champions League rather than the team that comes fourth.
“We need to ensure the rich don’t become richer.”
But Manchester United chief executive David Gill blasted: “The current system is the right one to ensure the best teams are in the competition.”
However, there was one bit of good news for the Premier League with the third-placed team no longer having to qualify.
Platini also wants the Champions League final to be changed to a Saturday from a Wednesday.
