The Good: Cesc Fabregas
The 20-year old Arsenal midfielder epitomized the GunnersÂ’ electrifying comeback performance at White Hart Lane that saw them go top of the table. In a game where several golden chances were squandered at both ends, he was a model of composure, and served as the glue that held his team together in the middle of the park. He provided for the equalizer on 65 minutes when his driven free-kick tempted Paul Robinson to come off his line, and was firmly met by the head of Emmanuel Adebayor. The Spaniard took center stage himself with only ten minutes left when he drove at the retreating Spurs defenders, and then smacked the ball from 25 yards out, bending it toward the top corner, with Robinson able to get the slightest of fingertips to it, but nothing more. ThatÂ’s four goals in the last four matches for Arsenal; he is on fire at the moment.
Fabregas capped off his performance and a fantastic day for Arsenal four minutes into injury time, when he fed the ball to Adebayor at the edge of the box, and the Togolese striker stole the show as he set himself up for a volley that flew under the bar. In a day that saw a few scrappy and underachieving performances by even the highest quality of players, this was by far the best match. And Fabregas embodied the attacking and attractive football that both Arsenal and Tottenham should be proud to have displayed.
The Bad: Luke Young
The Middlesbrough defender doomed his team to an away defeat to West Ham after only 51 minutes, as he needlessly put the ball into his own net. In a game in which the visitors had to fight merely to keep pace, they could not afford a mistake of Young’s magnitude. Partial credit for the goal must be given to Hammers striker Carlton Cole, whose incisive run from midfield opened up the play. He then sent a ball on the ground into the box, and as Young stretched to cut it out he could only manage to slide it into the empty net. He could only hide his face in his hands, and will be especially disappointed with himself, as the ball looked close enough for ‘Boro keeper Mark Schwarzer to intercept, and he was already off his line when Young made the intervention. A disappointing result for Middlesbrough, who fall well into the bottom half of the table.
The Ugly: Jose Mourinho
The Chelsea boss could not hide his frustration at his teamÂ’s 0-0 draw at home to Blackburn Rovers on Sarturday. In a game in which the visitors denied the star-studded Blues for 99+ minutes, Mourinho could be seen complaining bitterly on the sidelines, and constantly engaging in disputes with referee Howard Webb. The key to the match for Blackburn was physical and aggressive defending, especially by David Dunn and Christopher Samba. Mourinho set an example for his players, and the twelve of them could be seen arguing every call that went against the home side, even in clear cases of unnecessary or dangerous fouls. The Portuguese manager exemplified poor sportsmanship, and one could see a pleasant contrast between him and mild-tempered Blackburn manager Mark Hughes.
The Special One, however, did have a very good reason to appeal on the hour mark, as the linesman wrongly disallowed a Salomon Kalou goal, the Ivorian having converted a Juliano Belletti cross from six yards out. Mourinho served as well to re-open the ongoing debate regarding the integration of replay technology into the English Premier League, as he held up his television monitor and implored Webb to take another look. Chelsea will feel hard done by, but neither their performance nor their managerÂ’s tactics were enough to merit a victory.
