Disgraced defender Valentin Nastase has revealed that his life has become a living hell after giving up a decisive penalty which led to Dinamo BucharestÂ’s exit from the Champions League preliminaries at the hands of Lazio.
The 32-year-old has been singled out as the scapegoat after Dinamo’s European dreams came to screeching halt. He has now taken up legal action against Romanian sports daily Fanatik led the hate-campaign by running the headline “How much did it cost?” beside a picture of the infamous tackle.
"They are killing me,” howled Nastase, whose hopelessly mistimed tackle was made even more suspect by the fact that he has spent much of his career in Italy with Bologna, Palermo, Genoa and most recently Ascoli.
“I tried to explain but they would not let me. I decided to take them to court, because when people see me in the street, they I ask me if I took money. Now let’s see what happens, I don’t want money, I want an apology. I made a mistake playing, it can happen to anyone."
Nastase is now considering retiring from football altogether after having terminated his contact with Dinamo as a result of people within the club turning on him as well.
“I am disappointed because those who should have supported me, did not,' he said. 'I'm responsible for the elimination. I don't know what I'll do now.”
