Abramovich offers Russians £40k per man to beat England

Roman Abramovich risked the wrath of his Chelsea captain John Terry last night by putting Russia's players on £40,000 a man to beat England.
Details of the incredible gesture from Chelsea's billionaire benefactor, who bankrolls Guus Hiddink's £1.5million-a-year salary as Russia coach, were disclosed just 24 hours before tonight's Euro 2008 qualifier at Wembley.
England skipper Terry is one of four Chelsea players in an unchanged team following Saturday's 3-0 triumph over Israel, but Abramovich has put club loyalties to one side in order to give Russia a huge incentive to qualify for next summer's finals.
Around £15,000 a man is coming from the Russian Football Union, which is funded by Abramovich, and another £25,000 has been guaranteed from the Russian National Football Academy, which is also backed by the Chelsea owner.
Russia striker Alexander Kerzhakov said: "For me it doesn't really matter if it's Abramovich's money or someone else's.
"I play for the colours of the Russian flag and not for banknotes." -

Terry vows to upset Roman
Chelsea skipper Terry said he had not spoken to Abramovich about the Group E game but admitted: "I don't mind upsetting Roman because we need to beat Russia.
"As far as I am concerned this is about England and England only. It will be great to pick up those three points with a win over Russia and think about the England supporters rather than anyone else." -

Roman bonuses claim denied
Chelsea have rejected reports that the club's billionaire owner Roman Abramovich had offered Russia's players £40,000-a-man to beat England.
A Chelsea statement, posted on the club's official website, said: "Contrary to media reports this morning in Russia and Britain, Chelsea would like to clarify that Roman Abramovich has never offered, proposed or promised any bonuses to the Russian team to beat England.
"The financial backing Mr Abramovich gives to Russian football, via his National Academy of Football foundation, is for the development of the game as a whole and is not focused on specific matches.
"Mr Abramovich supports grassroots football initiatives through such efforts as building football pitches, helping to organise youth sports academies and providing training for coaches." -
