Martin Jol accused Jermain Defoe of disrespecting his team-mates for the childish way he reacted to being substituted during Tottenham's Carling Cup victory last night.
The England striker had been given his first start of the season against Middlesbrough but saw his night brought to a premature end when he was hauled off in the 69th minute to be replaced by Robbie Keane.
Spurs fans booed the decision to substitute Defoe who, inspired by the reaction of the crowd, chose to act like a petulant child as he slouched low in his touchline seat almost directly behind that occupied by Jol.
The Spurs boss was far from happy with the way Defoe acted and in an obvious rebuke to the player he said after the 2-0 win: "Even with children, if they have a lot of support they feel confident. But I always say if you come off you have to show respect for your team-mates."
It was not a happy end to the evening for Defoe, who earlier yesterday had been fined £60 and given three points by magistrates for using a mobile phone while driving.
