*Lions in pole position for second round*
The Lions have put themselves in pole position to go through to the second round of the FIFA World Cup Asian Zone qualifying tournament following a comprehensive 4-0 win over Palestine in Doha on Monday.
A brace from Shi Jiayi plus goals from John Wilkinson and Noh Alam Shah gives Singapore a massive advantage going into the second leg at the National Stadium on 28 October.
Jiayi gave Singapore the lead a minute before half-time as he connected with Mustafic FahrudinÂ’s cross from the right with a firm downward header that gave Palestine goalkeeper Ramzi Saleh no chance.
Eight minutes after the break, the Home United midfielder unleashed a fierce shot into the bottom corner after an excellent defence-splitting pass from Khairul Amri, to make it 2-0.
Another fine pass from Young Lions midfielder Khairul Amri found Wilkinson charging into the box from an onside position while the Palestine defenders were distracted by Agu CasmirÂ’s clever dummy.
WilkinsonÂ’s clever dink over the onrushing Ramzi Saleh was his second international strike after his goal against the United Arab Emirates last month.
Four minutes before the end, Alam Shah got himself on the end of Khairul AmriÂ’s cross to nod in the LionsÂ’ fourth goal of the evening.
“It was a good result,” said Singapore coach Radojko Avramovic.
“I felt tonight we scored the goals that we couldn’t score against the UAE (last month) and in the June friendly tournament (against DPR Korea, Saudi Arabia and Australia) so it was good to see all the things we tried out at training finally coming off.”
“(Shi) Jiayi scored two very good goals and I felt that John (Wilkinson) did well, providing extra security in midfield and doing plenty of running and passing.”
“I am happy to see that no one is seriously injured so the players must take care of themselves when they go back to their clubs and only then can we look at the second leg.”

Nothing in this world should stop Singapore from beating Palestine in the 2nd leg unless they demolish the old stadium at half time Cant wait for it to be over so can that the lions can move on to second round.

Corright Lah...best to ignore media and judge any team by their performance but 4-0 for the first leg is hard to erase especially when a war torn countrylike Palestine is playing in the Lion"s Den Yah Yah man 'lion's den'some more but 4-0 mah so can talk big rite? .If you put too much confidence in a great team like Brasil they would simply lose but if you put a little confidence in SIngapore, you should see them playing in the 3rd stage.No need to worry about the coming 2nd leg I think the whole body is already inOriginally posted by iceFatboy:if I not wrong, this is first leg, right??

World Cup 2010 Asian Qualifiers
The minor nations in the Asia region will be play a first round of qualifiers this month, ranked based on previous World Cup performance. After Bhutan and Guam withdrew, Kuwait and Indonesia were given a bye into the second round.
In round one, there will be 17 two-legged ties. From the remaining 19 nations, the top 11 ranked teams will automatically move into round three (Kuwait are guaranteed this while Indonesia's fate depends which other nations win). The eight lowest ranked nations will play another two-legged play-off. This will take a total of 15 teams into round three.
Australia, South Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Iran and now also Kuwait will not join in qualifying until the third round next year. The 20 nations will be drawn into five groups of four teams playing on a round-robin basis. The top two teams in each group qualify for the fourth round.
Match dates in 2008: February 6, March 26, June 7, June 14, September 6, September 10.
In Round Four, the ten nations which are left are drawn into two groups of five. The top two teams will qualify for the World Cup.
Match dates in 2008: October 15, November 19.
Match dates in 2009: February 11, March 28, April 1, June 6, June 10, June 17, September 5, September 9.
The two teams which finish third will then play-off and the winning nation then faces a further play-off against a country from Oceania for a place in South Africa.
Play-off dates: October 10, 2009 and October 14, 2009. Then November 14, 2009 and November 21, 2009.
