Juande Ramos has been promised a £40million transfer war chest to revive Tottenham's season. The new White Hart Lane manager, who resigned at Sevilla last night, has been told to start drawing up a list of targets for the January transfer window, when a goalkeeper to replace the error-prone Paul Robinson will be high on his priority list. Tottenham are determined to give Ramos every opportunity to make an impression this season, and will match the amount they allowed departing manager Martin Jol to spend in what was to prove to be a wasteful summer of spending. Ramos was expected to fly into Luton on a private jet in the early hours of this morning to be at White Hart Lane for tomorrow's match against Blackburn, and a hotel booking has even been made — although he will not officially take charge of the team until the Carling Cup encounter with Blackpool.
He went to Sevilla's Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan at 10.25pm last night to hand in his resignation. He was accompanied by fitness coach Marcos Alvarez, who also resigned and will join Ramos at White Hart Lane. Ramos has already begun a brutal assessment of Spurs' first-team squad that could end Robinson's reign as first choice keeper.
He has identified several areas of the team that need improving. The Sevilla coach has been watching DVDs of Tottenham and England matches as he attempts to familiarise himself with the Premier League, and Sportsmail understands a new goalkeeper is one of his first targets.
Tottenham have conceded 21 goals in just 10 League games and Robinson, who is currently out of the firing line with an injury, will have to prove himself to Ramos if he is stay at White Hart Lane. Ramos has impressed Spurs officials with his methodical approach and he will need to make an immediate impact.
