Milan midfielder Andrea Pirlo has revealed that there was a possibility that he could have moved to Real Madrid following last summerÂ’s Calciopoli crisis.
The RossoneriÂ’s original punishment for their part in the scandal was a 15 point Serie A penalty and a one-year ban from the Champions League.
On appeal Milan were allowed to enter EuropeÂ’s premier club competition and the point deductions were reduced to eight points.
However between the original and final punishment, the DiavoliÂ’s future was very much in doubt and if their appeal had failed the club could have been forced, like Juventus, to sell off many of its top stars.
“In the summer of 2006 there was a rumour of a possible move to Real Madrid,” said Pirlo
“It was a strange thing because the Calciopoli scandal had just erupted, but in the end I opted to remain here."
