England gifted lifeline by Israel

A goal in the second minute of stoppage time by Omer Golan gave Israel a 2-1 victory over Russia and threw England an amazing lifeline. This result means that Steve McClaren's side need only to draw against Croatia in their final qualifier on Wednesday to secure a Euro 2008 place at Russia's expense.
England's reprieve was all down to the Israelis. They took the lead through Elyaniv Barda when Yitzhaki played a deft ball into the box and Barda produced a cool finish with the outside of his right foot to beat the Russian keeper.
But Diniyar Bilyaletdinov equalised on the hour mark when Andrei Arshavin rolled the ball to him and he fied home.
Then Russia hit the post late on, with England's hopes looking distinctly tenuous.
But Golan rescued them as the game moved into stoppage time. Russia were caught napping in defence and he nipped in to beat first the offside trap and then goalkeeper Gabulov, to keep England very much alive. -

But they're almost there .... they juz need a draw at Wembley against The Croats , who can't even beat Macedonia .

Israel played well la , give them credit when credit due .
Russia reverse , played belopw their usual standard , Guus Hiddink really really stunned by the second goal , cos their defender gifted them the 2 goals .
Defensive errors cost them this game .
England .... well , i owuld say , They are very lucky tonight .
Let's hope more clubs sign Israelis players as a reward .

As far as McClaren was concerned, a Russian win would have sent England out and probably cost him his job. So it must have been with shredded fingernails that he watched Dmitri Sychev hit a post with a last-minute shot that would have put Russia in front before Israel broke down to the other end and bagged a winner through Dorel Golan.
The nerve-racking conclusion means England now only need a point on Wednesday, against a Croatia side already through despite tonight's unexpected loss in Macedonia.
Golan has been promised a #50,000 Mercedes by Manchester-based bookmaker Fred Done for his winner but the effort could be worth much more to the FA, given it means England do not have to beat Croatia, something which could have been very tough without so many key men. -
