Xabi Alonso is a £15million target for Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid.
Alonso, 26 today, is contracted to Liverpool until 2012 but has been picked out by Atletico coach Javier Aguirre, who wants him in place for next season.
Aguirre has ordered his sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch to work on the deal.
The midfielder has not played since aggravating a foot injury against Arsenal in October — and there are fears he will not return until the New Year.
But Aguirre said: "Alonso is a big player and very important to any team because he helps defenders and also links with the attack.
"Today this type of player is almost unique and very valuable for a club."
Alonso admitted: "I have heard about the rumours involving Atletico and maybe Barcelona too but, formally, I know nothing.
"My objective is to be 100 per cent fit for the decisive moments to come in both the Premier League and Champions League.
"I also want to play for Spain at Euro 2008 so want to get the necessary minutes on the field."
