AVRAM GRANT became £½million richer yesterday when he signed a four-year contract as Chelsea boss. SunSport can reveal Grant will receive three months’ back pay as part of his new deal, which will give him a lump sum now. The former Israel boss took over from Jose Mourinho in September but has been working on his old deal. Grant’s friendship with Blues owner Roman Abramovich is one of the reasons there was no rush to change the deal over from his terms as director of football.
The contract, which is worth £2.5m a year, was agreed on Wednesday. It is also understood to include bonuses for winning trophies, which would see him get much closer to Mourinho’s £5m a year.
Grant’s first game in charge ended in a 2-0 defeat at Manchester United — but since then Blues have gone 16 matches unbeaten.
