Even after missing a period through injury, the worldÂ’s best goalkeeper in the worldÂ’s worse headgear is a simple choice ahead of the ageing Van Der Sar, cross-hating Reina and ArsenalÂ’s lesson in German humility, Almunia.
Right back – Bacary Sagna (Arsenal)
His haircut nearly kept him out but Sagna has arrived as one of WengerÂ’s few summer signings and fitted seamlessly into the team, although LiverpoolÂ’s improving Arbeloa deserves a mention.
Left back – Patrice Evra (Man United)
Possibly UnitedÂ’s most improved player of the year after a dubious start and the Frenchman has almost monopolised the full back position at Old Trafford. Elsewhere, Gael Clichy has proved thereÂ’s life after Ashley Cole at Arsenal.
Centre defence – Nemanja Vidic (Man United)
The uncompromising Serb has become United’s answer to John Terry without the injuries and his hard headed commitment has been the perfect foil for Ferdinand’s more cultured approach – the new Bruce and Pallister?
Centre defence – William Gallas (Arsenal)
Gallas is one of the few old heads among Arsenal’s young guns and his leadership qualities have brought the best from the Gooners in a way that Henry couldn’t manage – and he scores important goals too.
Right midfield – Cristiano Ronaldo (Man United)
Love him or hate him, youÂ’ve got to admit that the faking winker is at least the third best player on the planet and with 14 goals already this season he tops the scoring chartsÂ…from midfield
Centre midfield – Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)
Liverpool’s Captain Fantastic has been carrying his side for a while and is in the middle of another impressive scoring streak – if only he could do it on a more regular basis for England.
Centre midfield – Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal)
Has been out injured recently but started the season in startling form by adding goals to his outstanding repertoire and giving the Gunners belief that they could win without Thierry.
Left midfield – Anderson (Man United)
Not his ideal position but the boy from Brazil is looking more and more like the 'new Ronaldinho' with some inspiring displays after a terrible start, especially against Arsenal and Liverpool – a future star in the making?
Striker - Fernando Torres (Liverpool)
'El Nino' is starting to look like the transfer of the season. Liverpool’s lethal weapon has everything including pace, technique and commitment – and he would have scored even more goals so far had Rafa not rotated so much.
Striker – Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal)
Even heÂ’s been surprised at his form this year but since the shackles have been released by the departure of a certain Frenchman, the Kanu-alike player with pace has become a different prospect and is scoring the goals to prove it.
That’s four players apiece for both Man United and Arsenal, two from Liverpool and just one from Chelsea – is that a fair reflection of the season so far? -

Nope, Petr Cech is the best keeper not only in the premiership, but also the world. Only Gianluigi Buffon is capable of challenging that top spot. Bear in mind, Chelsea have been missing their top centrebacks, Ricardo Carvalho and John Terry for weeks.
