AVRAM GRANT has claimed victory over Manchester United in the race to sign Nicolas Anelka. Chelsea boss Grant is convinced a £10million January deal for the Bolton hitman is in the bag.
Moody French striker Anelka has a verbal agreement with Bolton that he can join a top-four club in next monthÂ’s transfer window. And he is expected to be unveiled as ChelseaÂ’s latest acquisition early in the New Year. Chelsea have been locked in a battle for AnelkaÂ’s signature with UnitedÂ’s Alex Ferguson and Manchester City for six months.
Grant is a long-time admirer of Anelka, 28, and tried to lure him to Portsmouth when he was their director of football. ChelseaÂ’s nine-goal striker Didier Drogba is out with a knee injury and will then head off to the African Nations Cup in January with the Ivory Coast. His absence leaves the Blues woefully short of firepower as the club battles to rip the Premier League crown back from FergieÂ’s reigning champions. Anelka signed a new four-year deal containing the top-four clause in the summer.
Chelsea skipper John Terry is also out for six weeks with a broken foot. -

On a side note....
Michael Ballack, is thought to have banked up to £4.5 million in wages since he last kicked a ball for Chelsea on 22 April, will attempt to prove value for money when he returns at Stamford Bridge tonight. -

Bolton boss still aims to keep key players
Gary Megson insists no clubs have been in contact with Bolton Wanderers regarding Nicolas Anelka.
Recent reports have claimed that Chelsea have fended off interest from Manchester duo City and United to sign the striker in the New Year.
But Bolton boss Megson has moved to play down rumours that the France international's departure from the Reebok Stadium is imminent.
And, with goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen having been linked with Galatasaray, Megson stressed his wish to retain his best players.
Quality
"There seems to be an awful lot in the papers and in the media, which is probably to be expected because of the quality of Nic," said Megson on Sky Sports News.
"One or two things are getting in there that really shouldn't.
"There has been no contact to myself and there has been no contact to anybody who works above me either. We are just told what's in the press and carry on with what we're doing.
"We want to keep hold of all our players. We want to improve it. People come and people go, but at this moment there is nothing really to discuss other than what's in the papers."
