Lionel completes trial with Grasshoppers
Singapore National goalkeeper Lionel Lewis has completed his one-week trial at Swiss Super League side Grasshoppers-Club Zürich.
Lewis will not be joining the 27-time Swiss champions. Grasshoppers Chief Scout Mats Gren had discussed with Lewis that he might be spending more time on the bench than playing if he signs on.
Gren said, “Lionel is a gifted goalkeeper with great potential. He has done well but our present first choice goalkeeper has an edge over him. It will not be good for Lionel and the Singapore National Team if he comes to us and not be given enough first team action.”
Lewis will join the Lions in Muscat, Oman on Tuesday 22 January for their training camp in preparation for the World Cup Qualifier against Saudi Arabia on 6 February. On his last day in the Swiss capital, he reflects on the one-week trial as an invaluable experience.
He said, “Grasshoppers is a great Club. My time at Grasshoppers has been invaluable, I trained twice daily and this experience has motivated me to work harder.”
Lewis is confident on the prospect of a Singapore player making it in Europe in the near future.
“From what I’ve seen, our top players will not look out of place here. I’m confident that more Singapore players will have similar opportunities like me.
“I’ll like to thank FAS, in particular A/P Ho Peng Kee, General Ng (Jui Ping) and Raddy (Avramovic), as well as Home United and Grasshoppers, for giving me this chance to come for this trial.” -
