Collina is the world's most famous football referee
Former referee Pierluigi Collina has been given police protection after receiving threatening letters, Italian media reported on Sunday. The ANSA news agency said that authorities in Tuscany had decided to issue Collina, well recognised internationally for his bald pate and piercing stare, with an escort after the 47-year-old was sent credible soccer-related threats to his home. Collina, who officiated at the 2002 World Cup final, is now chief of the referees of Serie A and Serie B, Italy's top two professional tiers.

It has not been revealed at this stage what the threats were about, although some believe it could be something related to the Calciopoli scandal.
Collina is a well-known hate figure among Juventus fans, who believe he was anti-Juve both during his time as a referee, and now in his new role as refereeing chief.
The bald-headed icon, a life-long supporter of Lazio, earned the eternal wrath of Bianconeri fans during the 1999/2000 season when he ordered Juventus to play their final game of the season against Perugia despite the pitch being heavily waterlogged.
Juventus lost 1-0, which allowed Lazio to be crowned as champions for only the second time in their history.
