Chelsea in £26million Berba swoop

CHELSEA will make a £26million swoop for Dimitar Berbatov this month. The Blues reckon the Tottenham hitman can revive their title challenge. Manchester United were also interested but accept they will be outbid by Roman Abramovich.
SunSport revealed yesterday the Bulgarian, 26, is ready to quit Spurs. And that has alerted United and Chelsea, who meet Berbatov’s criteria. Agent Emil Dantchev said: “If a club that corresponds to Dimitar’s class and ambition comes in with an offer that suits his current club in January, he would like to be allowed to go.”
Chelsea, who trail leaders Arsenal by six points, are desperate to boost their firepower. Star striker Didier Drogba has been plagued by injuries. The Ivory Coast ace is currently recovering from a knee op — and will probably fly out to the African Nations Cup when he is fit.
Meanwhile, Andriy Shevchenko has failed to live up to his billing as one of the world’s top strikers since a £30m move from AC Milan. The Ukrainian could return to the Italian giants if they come up with the cash. Salomon Kalou and Claudio Pizarro have failed to provide decent back-up in attack. And this has left boss Avram Grant searching for new talent in the January window.
Chelsea have been linked with a £10m move for Nicolas Anelka and could fall back to the Bolton striker if they fail with their Berbatov bid. Spurs supremo Daniel Levy insisted: “We are not a selling club, rather we are building for the future. When we have players on long contracts we have no need to entertain offers.”
Yet SpursÂ’ fight to hang on to Berba could be a lost cause. -

Chelsea to sign Anelka in time to play in FA Cup this weekend
Chelsea expect to land Nicolas Anelka in time to play in the FA Cup third round this weekend. While Bolton are attempting to hold on to Anelka for as long as possible, Avram Grant is pushing for the deal to be done within the next 72 hours to blood the £10million new recruit against QPR on Saturday.
Reports in the Daily Mirror suggest that Chelsea chief has got the go-ahead from owner Roman Abramovich to sign Anelka and another striker - Blackburn's Benni McCarthy could fit the bill for £8m after a fall-out with Rovers boss Mark Hughes.
Chelsea are desperate for reinforcements with Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou on African Nations Cup duty. And while the Chelsea board will refuse to sanction moves that would effectively do little more than patch up a squad suffering from an unprecedented injury crisis, up to £50m will be on the table. -

JUANDE RAMOS warned Chelsea last night: Dimitar Berbatov will cost £35million.
TottenhamÂ’s boss is desperate to hang on to his superstar striker.
And he made it clear anyone wanting to buy him must shatter the British transfer record — the £31m Chelsea paid AC Milan for Andriy Shevchenko.
It was claimed this week the Blues would go to £26m. But clearly that will not be enough.
Ramos admitted: “I think a club would have to break the British record to sign Berbatov.
“At this moment, we think Berbatov’s value is more than that price. For us he’s a very important player, not to say irreplaceable. We don’t want to sell him. But everyone has a price.”
Spurs hope their monster valuation of the Bulgarian will deter Chelsea, Manchester United and any other ‘big club’ from an approach.
Ramos added: “It’s not a question for me if a club can pay this. It’s normal that, for a player of this level, they would have to pay such an amount because there are very few players of his class.
“But I fully expect that, at the end of January, I will still have all my four strikers.”
Chelsea have told Berbatov to prove he wants to play for them.
Berbatov’s representatives believe they have a verbal agreement on a 3½-year Blues deal which would hoist his salary from £35,000 a week to £90,000.
But agents acting for the club are insisting the player should demand a transfer and force the situation.
Avram Grant wants a new hitman in place urgently.
If BerbatovÂ’s situation becomes protracted, Chelsea will move instead for BoltonÂ’s Nicolas Anelka. He would cost less than half BerbatovÂ’s fee. -
