Rafa: 'Champions League Is Harder To Win Than Title'

Rafa Benitez claims that Arsenal and Chelsea are jealous of Liverpool because the Champions League is the hardest trophy to win.

In a ludicrous statement, Benitez claims that becoming European champions is more difficult than winning the Premier League title.

This obviously fails to explain why Benitez and other Reds managers before him have found it so difficult to win the title while twice reaching the Champions League final.

"How many teams have won the Champions League? That is a massive trophy and it is more difficult to win than any other trophy," Benítez says in The Guardian.

"The Premier League is our target because we have won the Champions League. If you ask Chelsea or Arsenal what they would like to win most of all, I am sure they would say the Champions League. After 18 years without the Premier League we want to win it, but we have to be more consistent."

The Liverpool manager added: "I came here to improve things and I still remember my first conversations about what we wanted to do here. In three years' time the target was to be contenders, and in three years we have won four trophies and played in seven finals. So we have improved.

"We haven't been at the top level in the league for 15 years. Before I came we hadn't won the Champions League for 21 years. We are improving, but we cannot say it is enough."

Liverpool are currently 17 points behind leaders Arsenal, who are of course seething with jealousy.

Actually there's some truth to what he's saying. Champion's league has the knockout element to it. You can play well for 30 games, but if you do badly for one game you just might be out of the competition.

I'm not saying it's easy to win a league, it's about consistency and endurance. It's just that sometimes, you can afford the 1 or 2 losses and still win the league. Like how Man U lost to West Ham last season. You can have back to back two bad games and still be champions.

But overall, I feel it's a different type of challenge. The only thing is that you have to well in the league to be able to play Champion's League Football. And Champion's League brings a good amount of revenue.

It's better to be consistantly playing in Champion's League each season rather than doing well it in one season and not playing in it for a few years. Look at Leeds United as an example.
