Lions preparing well in Riyadh
Singapore are shaping up well for its 2010 FIFA World Cup Asian Zone qualifying match against Saudi Arabia in Riyadh on Wednesday. The players have enjoyed some good training sessions at the city’s Football Federation headquarters on the outskirts of the city where a well-grassed field has been provided.
On Monday morning the team did its daily stretching exercises in the grand ballroom of their city centre hotel under the ornate chandeliers of the impressive auditorium. Later that evening, after another team video session, the players and coaching staff were due to head back to their training field for more ball work.
Lions’ coach Radojko Avramovic is pleased with his team’s preparation. Avramovic stressed that the missed training opportunities in Jordan did the players no harm at all. Bad weather conditions prevented the team from making full use of their time in the capital Amman. “You saw how we played against Jordan,” he said. “Missing that training in Jordan meant the players had a chance to rest as they have been working very hard in the Middle East.”
On the coming match against Saudi Arabia the coach emphasised the need for a 100 per cent effort from everyone. “We know that we cannot compete individually against the Saudis but as a team if we all work hard and do our best we have a chance.
“The Saudi team is strong as its player development is so good,” he explained. “The grassroots is good and the youth development. “They also have a very good league and get a lot of good international tournaments to compete in.
It is cool in the capital but while it is expected to be rather cold for a match that is kicking off around 8.15pm, the players are managing well after the difficulties they faced with the snow in Amman.
Spirits are high and players are all looking forward to the match and a happy homecoming, with a number of the players especially keen to see their young children again.
Having said that, everyone is focussing strictly on training and on the forthcoming match at the moment.

I certainly hope the Singapore team is as ready as Thailand. My guess is both team to lose by a low goal margin to Saudi Arabia and Japan respectively.

Its going to be a David & Goliath match for Singapore and I dont think a Singapore sling is going to down Goliath this time judging from their recent preparation.
Don't waste your money lah... Singapore already lose to Jordan 2-1 just days ago only and also lose to another Middle east side 2-0 earlier and these teams are not even in the qualifier... Sad to say but my take is Saudi to win by 2 to 3 goals or maybe even more... Anyway, what is the odds for Saudi giving ball and how many? A better bet i think...
It was encouraging when they beat Kuwait 2-0 but losing 2-0 to Oman is an Anti-climax as for the Jordan game...blame it on the snow or Santa Claus is not going to help either.I cant imagine a draw even if I was smoking grass all day so Singapore would be really lucky to escape with a 1 goal lost that is if everything goes well on that day.

don't see much into friendly results. if u want to do so, you should know Saudi barely beat Lichetenstein 2-1 a few days ago as well.

As you already know I am also a staunch supporter of the lions but I do have the gut feeling that they are not going to beat Saudi or get any points for all the right reasons in the opening game.I really wished I was wrong but just my gut feeling also that Japan is going to struggle to beat Thailand tomorrow.Simi Lichentein
How soon can you forget that they also beat Man U?![]()
not all Saudi national team players come from Al Hilal.
Before that match I didnt even know of such team as Al Hilal to be honest and we all knew that the game was KELONG but tomorrow it wont be a fix match .My feeling is also based on what Raddy commented about the Saudi team like as if he was already throwing the towel before the big fight.Just like you I am going to wish the lions all the best and who knows if Miracles do happen.Keep your fingers cross buddy.![]()
that match is really Man U kelong lah. of course give them win lah, they already pocket the 1 million pounds liao.
If I was the lion's coach I would encourage my players to play professional dirty football tomorrow and give their forwards a hard painful time as long as they dont get red cards for it I would be quite happy. Some of their players like you know who already should be watertight mark.....Yes, break Qahtani's legs and make him weep.It is a simple case of kill or be killed,it is war!!!![]()

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has written to all Member Associations of teams taking part in Round 3 of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers (Asian Zone) to inform them that all single cautions received by players in the previous two qualifying rounds are CANCELLED with immediate effect.
This will mean that Faizal Hamid, Ismail Yunos, John Wilkinson, Noh Rahman and Khairul Amri who received single cautions in the first two rounds against Palestine and Tajikistan will have them cancelled before our Lions kick off their third round campaign against Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, 6 February in Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia vs Singapore

RIYADH, 5 February 2008: Singapore will kick off their 2010 FIFA World Cup Asian Zone Round 3 Qualifying campaign on Wednesday 6 February against four-time World Cup Finalists Saudi Arabia at the King Fahad International Stadium in Riyadh.
The match kicks off at 8.15pm local time.
“It’s the biggest game, I would say, since we met China (in an Asian Cup Qualifier in 2006),” said Lions’ coach Radojko Avramovic on the eve of the match.
“It’s definitely our most important challenge ever.”
Singapore has trained thoroughly in preparation for the match having played three friendly matches against Kuwait, Oman and Jordan in the past two weeks.
There is a small doubt over defender Daniel Bennett’s fitness. He reported a minor groin strain after Monday’s evening training.
“If Daniel is not fit we will bring in Ismail Yunos,” said the coach. “Daniel will train with us this evening and we will see how it goes then.”
Avramovic also noted that Lionel Lewis would be handed the captaincy for this important match as regular captain Indra Sahdan will start on the bench.
“Indra is still our captain,” he said. “There is no change there. When he is on the field he will carry the armband as usual.”
Avramovic hinted that his aim will be to contain the Saudis in the first half and he may then unleash some of his other players as the game unfolds in the second half.
The Saudis are likely to field a side that has changed little over recent months though Abdul Rahman Al-Qahtani has not been included in their squad due to a lack of regular playing time following his transfer to Al-Ittihad.
Saudi’s Brazilian coach, Helio dos Anjos had stressed that he would only be including players with regular first team football at club level.
But it is the star performer, the more well-known Al-Qahtani, Yasser, who will be the man to watch
Avramovic has been emphasising the importance of keeping the reigning AFC Player of the Year quiet as any coach might.
Apart from the 25 year old Yasser, striker Malek Mouath, a year older, is an ever-present danger.
The Green Falcons’ recent form is patchy, with their recent 2-1 friendly win over Luxembourg only their second win in five matches. They had lost 3-1 at home to Syria in December as well as 2-1 away to both Egypt and Libya in November. They had however beaten Estonia 2-0 in that month too.
Avramovic continues to stress the importance of playing as a team.
“My players know that this is no time for individuals, it is vital we all give 100 per cent as a team in this match.”
“We all want to go to the World Cup and the players will all be putting their hearts into it. That is all I can ask of them, to give their best for Singapore.”
Probable lineup: Lionel Lewis (gk) (captain), Noh Rahman, Baihakki Khaizan, Precious Emuejeraye, Daniel Bennett, Shahril Ishak, Mustafic Fahrudin, John Wilkinson, Shi Jiayi, Khairul Amri and Aleksandar Duric.

I am appalled that MediaCorp does not seem interested at all to
broadcast this important game. Historic or not, it IS our NATIONAL
TEAM. Their games deserve to be broadcast on television.
ESPECIALLY THIS WORLD CUP QUALIFIER MATCH AND THE 5 OTHER GROUP GAMES IN THIS STAGE.
How much viewership does Mediacorp expect from some BORING AMERICAN
MOVIE like HOPE SPRINGS as compared to a football game like SAUDI
ARABIA vs SINGAPORE.
I am certain viewership for the match would max out the HOPE SPRINGS viewership rate by 10, 20 times.
This sort of opportunity only comes once every 4 years, and our ONLY
local broadcaster does not have any interest in showing the match live.
This has got to be the worst case of media monopoly I’ve ever encountered personally.
If MEDIACORP is not able to provide what the majority want, then it is
time for another broadcaster to emerge. A broadcaster who will support
our LIONS.
THUMBS DOWN FOR MEDIACORP.
Is it because the game will be played when everyone is sleeping in Singapore after all this is not like EPL.So who is going to be here to do live commentary?
