The Singapore national team captain will leave for the United States on Wednesday [Singapore time] and is expected to train with Real Salt Lake’s first team. Indra currently plies his trade in the country’s domestic S-League turning out for Home United FC.
The 28-year-old is one of the most prolific forwards in South-east Asia. He has scored 24 goals in 86 appearances and netted against teams like Manchester United [in 2001], Uruguay [in 2002] and Japan [in 2004]. He is also the first local player to score 100 goals in the S-League.
Recently, he played for Singapore against Saudi Arabia in a World Cup third-round qualifier in Riyadh.
His agent, Dave Roberts, revealed that Indra’s skill and pace had attracted the interest of the Utah-based side. Real Salt Lake finished sixth in the Western Conference last year and are looking to sign an experienced striker.
Should Indra seal a permanent move to the club, he will be the first Singaporean to play in the MLS.
Said Roberts: “They [Real Salt Lake] want to see if he can perform at his best level in America. It’s a great opportunity for him [Indra] and for Singapore football.”
