  AC Milan youngster Alexandre Pato has shaken off an ankle injury and will be available to play at Arsenal in Wednesday's Champions League showdown. The return of Pato, who has scored four league goals for Carlo Ancelotti's team since making his debut earlier this year, is good news for the Rossoneri who recently lost Ronaldo for the remainder of the season to a knee injury.

  The 18-year-old missed his team's last three league games, including Saturday's goalless draw at Parma. The Milan outfit, already without goalkeeper Dida, may also be missing back-up Zeljko Kalac. Kalac sustained a hand injury in Sunday's training and will undergo further tests on Monday to confirm his availability.

  AC Milan striker Alberto Gilardino knows his team have a tough tie ahead of them at the Emirates Stadium. We must play a great game," admitted Gilardino. "This is a very important encounter for us and we are training well to arrive to the game in the best possible mental and physical form in order to play the perfect game."

  Milan welcomed back Kaka at the weekend. The Brazil star has recovered from a knee injury having missed two league encounters. The European champions will be hoping veteran midfielder Clarence Seedorf is able to shake off an ankle injury in time for Wednesday's clash.

  Capello warns Inter of Reds peril

  

   

  England manager Fabio Capello has warned Serie A leaders Inter Milan to expect a battle when they meet Liverpool in the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday.

  Rafa Benitez's Liverpool have reached the final of Europe's premier competition twice in the last three years - winning in 2005 - but are struggling in the Premier League this season and crashed out of the FA Cup to Championship side Barnsley at the weekend.

  Capello insists, however, that Liverpool's poor domestic form will count for little when they host Roberto Mancini's men at Anfield this week.

  He said: "Liverpool, when playing in the Champions League, transforms itself.

  "At home they have a lot of support and that's why they must be taken very seriously."

  Elsewhere on Tuesday, Roma contest the first leg of their last-16 tie with Real Madrid at the Stadio Olimpico.

  Capello has coached both teams before, leading Real to last year's Primera Liga crown and Roma to the Scudetto in 2001, and has backed the Italians to triumph over two legs.

  "I think Roma can do it," he said. "The only doubt I have is that when Real Madrid travel to the Stadio Olimpico they always play well.

  "Roma must try to avoid going forward in numbers because Real are very strong in counter-attacking."

  Real have won all three of their previous encounters in the Italian capital.

  Benitez hails 'important' victory

  

  The fine win over Inter Milan should ease the pressure on Benitez

  Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez admitted his side's 2-0 Champions League win over 10-man Inter Milan was crucial after another turbulent week for him. The Spaniard has come under intense pressure this season and none more so than this week following Liverpool's FA Cup exit to Barnsley at the weekend. And he said: "I think everyone knew we needed this. It was really important for the club and fans that we won. "I have always had confidence in this team and we will win a lot of games."

  Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard got the goals in the last five minutes what had at one point looked like being a frustrating match to ensure Liverpool are well placed to make the quarter-finals of the competition. That came after Marco Materazzi had seen red on the half hour and Benitez said: "We needed to be patient.

  "Against a good team like Inter, who are a very well organised outfit, you have to be patient and wait for the chances to come, because they will. "It will be difficult for them to come back now, but they have a lot of good players and while we are confident, we will not be complacent."

  It was a particularly pleasing night for Kuyt, who has also come under criticism after a lean season in front of goal, but Benitez played down suggestions he and the team wanted to hit back at the critics at Anfield. "The determination to prove people wrong was no different to any other game," he said. "We've not had much luck of late and the confidence is low but we must keep keeping working and that's what we did.

  I'm also pleased for Kuyt. I have a lot of confidence in him because his commitment is always 100% and every team needs a player like that." Benitez' Italian counterpart Roberto Mancini refused to admit that it was game over. "We knew that after Liverpool's defeat at the weekend (knocked out at home in the FA Cup by Championship side Barnsley) they were going to come out all guns blazing.

  "However, Steven Gerrard's goal is not our death knell. Other teams have come back from such deficits." The second leg of the last-16 match takes place at the San Siro on 11 March.
