Police today began an investigation at the midlands club but insist
that nobody connected with the club had yet been questioned or arrested.
The
corruption is not said to be related to the Lord Stevens inquiry from
last year. Lord Stevens' report was published earlier this season and
addressed illegal payments to agents amid transfer activity;
approximately 17 transfer deals that were thought to have been illegal
transactions.
Birmingham City have now released a statement on
their official website regarding the current investigation and voicing
their full cooperation with the police.
The statement read: "The
club is fully co-operating with the police in their inquiries which
relate to an unconnected third party or third parties.
"For the avoidance of doubt no-one connected with the club has been questioned or arrested.
"No further comment will be made by the club."
As
it stands, the club itself does not appear to be in any danger of
facing legal action. We await the release of further information
regarding the parties involved and the exact nature of the corruption
in this inquiry.
