The Frenchman, who took over the skipper's role from the departed
Thierry Henry, has received much criticism of late for the way he has
led his side.
Both Arsenal fans and football pundits have
accused the defender of bowing down too quickly in the face of pressure
and failing to adequately rally the troops when it mattered most in key
matches.
Asked whether Gallas would be his long-term skipper,
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said he hadn't planned on reallocating the
captain's armband before the end of this campaign, but that next season
was a lot less clear.
“I can’t answer that question," said the
Emirates boss. "I want to analyse the season, after the season has
finished. At the moment, he will be my captain until the end of the
season. I believe William has learned a lot this year," Wenger
continued. "I can only say his commitment and desire to do well was
exceptional. I don’t want to go into any other individual assessment. I
made the decision to make him captain and I have to stand up for that
decision.”
