The ex England and Liverpool midfielder has plenty of previous
experience in the role, most famously as Sam Allardyce's right-hand man
at the Reebok, and he also already a close associate of Reds boss Rafa
Benitez from his time in Spain
In fact, Benitez advocated Lee's
appointment when former first-team coach Alex Miller accepted an offer
to become manager of J League outfit JEF United Chiba last month.
Liverpool
chief executive Rick Parry is said to have held numerous discussions
with Lee during the course of the week, and all indications are that an
agreement will be reached.
This will not be the first time that
Lee has been involved in the backroom at Anfield having previously been
reserve team manager and first team coach at the club under Graeme
Souness and Gerard Houllier.
Benitez, in the meanwhile, has
suggested that he will be thinking about how best to prepare the club
for the coming season even while on holiday with his family.
“I
don’t tend to have too much time away from football, but I will try to
switch off for a bit,” he said. “I will have to try to hide my mobile
phone, and if my wife can't find out about it I’ll try and keep it on
me.
“But if she finds it I’m sure she’ll throw it in the swimming pool.”
