Ronaldo named captain of Portugal

LISBON: Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo assumed former great Luis Figo’s role on Tuesday as he was handed his number 7 shirt and named captain by Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.
The 23-year-old Manchester United winger – scorer of 41 goals in all competitions this campaign – will attempt to achieve something Figo never managed, guiding the Portuguese to a major senior title, having lost 1-0 to Greece in the Euro 2004 final.
Ronaldo also wears the number 7 shirt at United, which has been previously worn by George Best, Eric Cantona and David Beckham.
Ronaldo was chosen as captain over four players who previously captained the side – Nuno Gomes, Petit, Simao and Ricardo Carvalho – who are in the squad.
Portugal, who are currently training in the town of Viseu in central Portugal, are in Group A with co-hosts Switzerland, 2004 semi-finalists Czech Republic and 2002 World Cup semi-finalists Turkey.

How is he like as a captain? Any good? I know he stood in as captain in one of the Utd's matches but I wonder whether he will do his pouting act when decisions don't come his way.

I know ronaldo failed portugal in the last campaign. He had many misses in the final against greece.

Every year we get to see a new and improved Ronaldo so hopely it goes that way also with Portugal.

Anybody can become Captain if it makes a diffirent between winning & losing which is why even keepers can become one while at the back sleeping between the posts.

well, have to wait and see if he can lead the team to glory den.. haha..i dun mind if portugal wins euro 08 coz no england for me to support lol.. so sad but yet funny when my friend told me that time, "siao liao england lost ytd, euro 08 no england liao.." i was like half laugh half sad.. lol..

But I guess Carvalho would have thought he would get the post cos he is afterall the senior player but Scolari knows best... I guess...
