Arsenal last night signed Samir Nasri, Marseille's attacking midfielder, for £12.5 million. The French international's arrival at the Emirates is likely to hasten the departure of Alexander Hleb, who has been interesting Barcelona.
Nasri can operate wide on the left of midfield, where Hleb has been playing, or through the middle, where Arsenal have just lost Mathieu Flamini to AC Milan. Nasri has been hailed in French circles, slightly prematurely, as the "new Zidane", although this has partly to do with his Algerian roots.
Only 20, Nasri has already scored for the full French team and has been included in Raymond Domenech's Euro 2008 squad. Arsenal's manager, Arsene Wenger, has been tracking Nasri for some time and moved quickly yesterday to head off rival bids from Real Madrid and Inter Milan.
Nasri's purchase indicates Arsenal's ambition and their ability to compete in the transfer market. Wenger traditionally likes to do his recruitment before tournaments, aware that prices can inflate suddenly.
Hleb, 27, has also been linked with a move to Barcelona's arch rivals Real Madrid. His representaive, Uli Ferber, said: "It is always a great honour that a club like Real Madrid is interested in him. This confirms the good work that Hleb has been doing in these last few years that he is being recognised by one of the greatest clubs in the world."

on a neutral side.. can wenger ever retain his gems after polishing them?
with 12.5m gone wondering how much more is left for him to further strengthen his teams depth? which had been the major setback for him last season

the gooners normally dun splash out too much on players unlike chelski n manure..
Arsenal insist reports they have signed Marseille's promising young attacking midfielder Samir Nasri for £12.5million are premature.
A club spokesperson said: "There has been no signing yet. In line with our usual policy, we will only announce when they are done."
thats what i'm trying to say, with 12.5m gone and without any returns for the player who left them, i seriously wonder how the supposingly more demanding next season (with Euro year coming) would be for them??
i think arsenal did fairly well polishing talent. most of them left in their peak or about to peak. can we name any player who left arsenal and play better elsewhere? i can only think of david bentley.
Do you think arsenal are right releasing the following player?
1. ashley cole--- injury prone.
2. henry-- injury prone and lost of speed.
3. petit-- no longer the old petit at barca and chelsea.
4. overmars-- play a year or 2 good football at barca and fade away.
5. anelka-- already 8 clubs and counting.
6. lauren-- injury prone and hardly a regular in portsmouth.
7. campbell--well, injury prone and hardly the same campbell at spurs, arsenal.
8. lunjberg-- well.. injured longer than well.
9. pires--injury prone and hardly a regular at villareal.
10.aliadiere-- well, not too strong for EPL. hardly a star in middlesborough.
11. pennant-- well, just never good enough to be playing in top 4 clubs.
hope that answer the question.
nice! =)
