GARETH BARRY has demanded Martin O’Neill lets him go to Liverpool. The England star phoned his Aston Villa boss to plead for a move after nearly 10 years in the Midlands. It marks A huge step up in the fight for the midfielder’s signature.
Barry’s agent Alex Black said: “Gareth has spoken to Martin since he returned from England’s game in Trinidad and told him how he feels. “At this stage of his career Gareth wants to be playing Champions League football and believes this is his chance to do it.”
Kop chief Rafa Benitez has been on Barry’s trail for two months since SunSport exclusively broke the news that Liverpool had made him their No 1 target. Barry’s big pal Steven Gerrard, the Liverpool captain, has also publicly campaigned for the transfer to happen.
But Villa have turned down two offers of £10million and £12m.
Barry has kept his counsel while Liverpool try to persuade O’Neill to sell.
But, with the Villa boss digging in, his skipper has taken matters into his own hands.
Villa want top dollar for Barry’s services and are refusing any player-plus-cash offers.
But Barry hopes a compromise deal can be thrashed out at around £15m.

Villa Kop £14million bid for Barry
LIVERPOOL will today make a £14million bid for Gareth Barry. SunSport revealed yesterday how Barry told Villa he wanted to go to Anfield and that his club had turned down bids of £10m and £12m.
Now Reds boss Rafa Benitez has the backing of his warring board to up the bidding again this morning.
The deal will be straight cash with add-ons if Liverpool win the Champions or Premier League title.
Aston Villa reject Liverpool's improved offer of £15million for England midfield ace Barry.

Aston Villa have rejected an improved £15million bid from Liverpool for captain Gareth Barry but manager Martin O'Neill is reluctant to sell the England midfielder and is holding out for at least £20million. Liverpool's pursuit of Barry has created a rift between manager Rafael Benitez and Villa counterpart O'Neill who is determined to keep the player.
