Italy have parted company with coach Roberto Donadoni following their exit from Euro 2008.
BBC Sport were told of the decision by the Italian football federation (FIGC) after speculation grew around Donadoni's future after the Spain loss.
He signed a two-year contract extension before Euro 2008 - but it contained a 10-day get-out clause on both sides.
Italy lost their quarter-final 4-2 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes of play.
Following Sunday's defeat, Donadoni was adamant he would not quit the role he took on in July 2006.
"Resign? The thought would never even entered my brain," said Donadoni.
"I don't have a reason. We only lost a game on penalties. You can't say things work when you win but don't work when you lose on penalties. We will talk and decide. It doesn't make any sense to talk about whether I deserve to carry on."
The Italian press is gunning for Donadoni’s head following the Euro 2008 defeat to Spain on Sunday night.
BBC Sport today reported that The Don has been notified that he has been sacked, however Petrucci says this is not true, and he also played down talk that Lippi was set to return to take charge.
"I think it's premature to be talking about the possible return of Marcello Lippi," said Petrucci.
"Donadoni still remains the coach and I will fully support what the federation decides.
"[Italian Football Federation president] Giancarlo Abete has every right and freedom to make the choice he considers to be best."
Petrucci also commented specifically on the penalty shootout loss against Spain, and he says that he holds no one responsible.
"I don't blame anything on the national team nor on Abete, we simply have to accept that our rivals were better than us," he concluded.
only a matter of time
Following a two hour meeting with the Italian FA on Thursday afternoon, Roberto Donadoni is no longer the coach of the Ialian national football team.
