Aston Villa have agreed to sign Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell - and will complete the deal "within 24 hours" should he pass a medical.
The Midlands club have settled on what is believed to be a fee of around £5.5 million for the former Reading player, who will fly out to link up with Villa's pre-season tour of Switzerland if his medical is successful.
Sidwell has been one of Martin O'Neill's main transfer targets since the season ended.
A club statement said: "Aston Villa have agreed to sign Chelsea's former England Under-21 midfielder Steve Sidwell, subject to a medical."
Sidwell has signed a new three-year contract at Villa, having made just 15 Premier League appearances during his 12 months with Chelsea.
"I am absolutely delighted to join. I am over the moon. It's taken a while but now it's done I am excited and looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting on the pitch and playing football,” he told Villa’s official website.
"There's been a lot of speculation and rumour about the deal and it has played on my mind a little but I've been professional and kept my head down.
"I am here now and can't wait to put a Villa shirt on and play for the fans. For me personally, it's about getting back and playing. I have had a year of not playing as much as I would have liked so to get out on the pitch is the first aim.
"It's straight down to work really. I have already done some pre-season with Chelsea but the hard work starts now.”
