Juventus have ended their interest in Xabi Alonso, with boss Claudio Ranieri confirming the only position he will now improve is that of goalkeeper.
The Old Lady unveiled new capture Christian Poulsen on Monday, the man Ranieri has opted to sign in preference to Liverpool midfielder Alonso.
Juve had initially pinpointed Alonso as their major summer target, but the deal fell apart as Liverpool would not budge on their asking price.
As a result, Ranieri has snapped up Sevilla water-carrier Poulsen, and the charismatic former Chelsea boss revealed the Dane completes his summer shopping for outfield players.
“We're 99% complete, at least in terms of people coming in,” Ranieri told Juventus’ official website.
“We only need another keeper and then we'll be all set, ready to face the new season.
“I'm really pleased with how the club operated and for this I thank them. I'm convinced I have a good team at my disposal; we'll be able to compete with everybody.”
Alonso looks increasingly likely to stay at Anfield, with his potential replacement Gareth Barry now a confirmed target of Arsenal.
The Gunners’ interest will ensure Aston Villa do not budge from their £18 million asking price, a valuation Liverpool were not prepared to match – even with the sale of Alonso.
Alonso has stated on several occasions that he wants to stay at Anfield, and now it appears he may get his wish.
