Having rejected Chelsea in favour of a move to Eastlands from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day, the Brazilian forward had been expected to make his Premier League debut against Luiz Felipe Scolari's team.
But with Robinho on international duty in South America with Brazil, Hughes is understood to be reluctant to thrust the 24-year-old into an immediate baptism against Chelsea. This is in spite of plans by City's new owners, the Abu Dhabi United Group, to fly Robinho and his City team-mates, Elano and Jo, to Manchester on a private jet following Brazil's World Cup qualifier against Bolivia in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday.
Brazil are not due to kick-off against Bolivia until 10pm local time – 2am in the UK – and the City trio are now not expected back in Manchester until the early hours of Friday morning.
And although Hughes is prepared to name Elano and Jo in his starting line-up against Chelsea, even after the draining effects of the flight, the City manager is aware that Robinho will be setting foot in Manchester for the first time on Friday and that he has yet to meet his new team-mates.
On his first competitive appearance since lining up against Argentina in June, Robinho scored once as Brazil recorded a 3-0 victory against Chile in Santiago on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Deco has warned City that all the money in the world will not make them of the biggest clubs in Europe.
The Chelsea midfielder has stirred the pot by claiming that the millions being invested into the club by the prospective new owners will not guarantee instant success.
