Paul Gascoigne has been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage. Police have declined to identify Gascoigne by name, but have confirmed that a 41-year-old man, understood to be the former England midfielder, was taken into custody this morning.
"A 41-year-old man was arrested at an address in Ravensworth Road, Dunston this morning on suspicion of criminal damage," said a Northumbria Police spokeswoman. "Inquiries are going."
Gascoigne's arrest is the latest turbulent chapter in what has been a troubled year for the former international. He has twice been sectioned under the Mental Health Act, first in February following reports of erratic behaviour at a Newcastle hotel and then again in June, when he approached a member of the public in an agitated state in Hertfordshire.
Gascoigne has become one of English football's most iconic figures, but has struggled for some time with alcoholism and depression.
