Everton lodge appeal with the FA against Tim Cahill's red card for tackle on Alonso in Merseyside derby
Everton have lodged an appeal with the Football Association over midfielder Tim Cahill's red card against Liverpool on Saturday.
The Australia international was dismissed in the 80th minute of the 2-0 Merseyside derby defeat at Goodison Park for his lunging tackle on Xabi Alonso.
Referee Mike Riley showed Cahill a straight red card, a fact which allows the Toffees to appeal.
According to the club, a hearing will take place later this week at which they are allowed to submit written documentation. Everton manager David Moyes said after the match: 'I don't think it was a sending-off - it warranted a yellow card, not a red. We'll have to ask the referee to have a look at it. It wasn't the worst tackle in the game.'
Cahill did not help his cause by walking away from the referee. And although Riley would have needed to show two yellow cards in order to include that behaviour in his judgment, Moyes seemed to suggest that it might have made a difference, adding: 'If you're going to get booked, hurry up and take it so you can get on.'
Cahill is facing a three-match ban, starting this weekend against Newcastle, if his appeal is unsuccessful.

It means the Australian will serve a three-match suspension, starting with the Premier League game against Newcastle on Sunday.
Cahill was sent off for "serious foul play" by referee Mike Riley following a challenge on Xabi Alonso in Everton's 2-0 defeat.
The Football Association confirmed an independent regulatory commission had rejected Cahill's appeal.
