Even Roman Abramovich is feeling the pinch of the global credit crisis and moves are being made to cut costs a Stamford Bridge, starting by charging Chelsea players to eat at their Cobham training ground canteen.

Money's too tight to mention: Roman Abramovich is looking to cut costs at Chelsea
Despite Abramovich’s huge personal wealth, Chelsea recently laid off 15 members of the club’s international scouting network and further cost cutting exercises are planned.
A report in the Sunday Mirror claims that the club are exploring ways of charging staff to use support services, starting with the canteen.
A club spokesman confirmed: “Costs at the training ground are part of an ongoing review. “We are aware that other clubs charge staff and players, but no decision has been taken yet.”
It is believed that a cost review of all areas of the club has been requested by chief executive Peter Kenyon.
Luiz Felipe Scolari has already been informed that funds to strengthen a side that has been beset by injuries this season in January will be limited unless he adds to the kitty by selling fringe members of the squad.
Frank Arnesen, who implemented the cuts in the scouting operation, said: “A structure is now in place, even though the credit crunch has meant Roman Abramovich has hit the financial brake and asked us to cut deep.
“We have cut down significantly on scouts and other activities.”

Is this what they meant by "No more free lunch"...
actually.. how much can the canteen get from it =.=
unless u tell me their canteen drinks is bird nest, food is lobster, soup is shark fin
Well, perhaps the food being given are high quality stuff... Afterall, the players probably need a lot of food and extra supplements to keep or build up their body strength... I bet these guys all eat alot considering how fit they have to keep themselves... And plus the youth squad and all the other coaches... maybe 60 to 100 staff daily... If they can save on feeding so many staff for 5 to 6 day a week... Maybe they can save quite alot...
i always see them eat spaghetti.![]()

the russian stock market is in tatters.
RA may be really really broke.
Who would have expected this happening to a billionaire... A few years ago when he first came over and started blowing his millions at clubs who didn't want to sell their stars, many people said even if he had spent hundred or millions, he would still have a lot of cash left over to last him a few lifetime... But 4 years down the road and so much has changed...
I bet he must be real cautious now as he has got used to his present lifestyle for the pass 10 yrs already and won't want to return to his earlier days where he was so broke that he had to depend on his former wife for food... That wife is no longer around, he has since divorced her... His present young girlfriend would probably dump him if he became very broke...
Reality check for Roman... no more wasteful spending...

Drogba misses home games against Newcastle and, crucially, the visit of Arsenal, on Nov 30, along with a trip to Bolton, as a result of the ruling by the FA's regulatory commission, after the striker controversially threw a coin and made a gesture to Burnley fans during last Wednesday's Carling Cup tie at Stamford Bridge.
When Jamie Carragher threw a coin at Arsenal fans during an FA Cup tie at Highbury he was sent off and received the mandatory three-match ban. He also received a formal warning from police, and Drogba faces a similar talking to.
Hammersmith and Fulham Police continue to liaise with the FA and Chelsea in an attempt to trace the fan who initially threw the coin at the striker. Burnley have promised to do "everything possible" to find the culprit.
So thats what they meant by exploring ways of charging staff... Well, $180,000 is also quite a lot of dough... Thanks Drogba for the generous donation... lol
