New Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas admits being given the captaincy by Arsene Wenger is "a big responsibility" but is relishing the opportunity.
The 21-year-old Spain midfielder was on Monday named captain after defender William Gallas was stripped of the armband following his ill-advised criticism of team-mates last week.
The young Catalan was thought to be in the running for the role when Thierry Henry left the club 18 months ago but Wenger opted for Gallas instead.
And now the influential midfielder - already one of the most senior players in Wenger's young squad - has been given his opportunity by the Gunners boss.
Fabregas will lead the side out in Tuesday's Champions League clash with Dynamo Kiev and told Arsenal's website: "It is a great honour for me to captain one of the biggest clubs in the world.
"It is a proud moment. I know it's a big responsibility but together with my team-mates, I know we have the spirit and commitment to get back to winning ways and fulfil our potential."
Wenger hopes the responsibility will not be too heavy for Fabregas, calling for "shared leadership".
"A successful team has a shared leadership inside the dressing room and he will be one of the leaders but not the only one," Wenger said.
"It is very important that we share that leadership inside the dressing room."
Imagine those older players with inferiority complex towards young people haha!

lol..
I personally feel he is not worthy of it... But then again, If you look around the whole Arsenal squad... There is no one who we could call captain material. So I am guessing he was chosen out of necessity rather than ability or worthiness...
i think people are giving him too much credit. in many matches he failed to perform.
get ready to buy all -1 1/2 in arsenal matches
arsenal problem is really very big.can see their weakness in their play aginst aston villa and man city.
the lack the strength in midfield. a holding midfielder who can hold the ball and win header in the middle of the field.
Denilson in my opinoion is not the quality player to be playing in the arsenal shirt. maybe he can play in middlebro, wigan.they lack the penetrative winger of pires, overmars, lunjberg.
really sad gunners.
maybe it is time for arsene to go.
its not time for wenger to go
its time for wenger to SPEND.

agreed. he must spend big on defence. w/o Gallas, they conceded a significant no. of goals.
n Wenger shld keep Cesc. make him an Arsenal legend.
i wonder if its really wenger's decision not to spend. what's the point of saving the money?
he has make it an habit.
spend less and nuture the youngster.
but the truth is, in EPL, u have to have a mixture of experience and youngster.
I think Arsenal's problems were not created overnight... I feel its something built-up over the course of time... and I have to say, Wenger is the main reason they are in this present state.
As good as he is or was, his handling of the club over the last few years is questionable...
I am just thinking, perhaps having a Master's degree in economics from Strasbourg University could be a bad thing afterall in football management... How ironic... lol
this is much of a better choice.
Well i proud of Fab
