Pompey were just a minute from beating Italian giants Milan in Adams’ first European match as a manager.
But Filippo Inzaghi levelled in injury-time after Ronaldinho hit a 30-yard free-kick.
Adams said: “They are gutted. They are deflated as they feel they should have and could have won.
"I’m not feeling that disappointed because of the performance but the guys are a bit flat as they wanted some reward for their hard work.
“I am really proud of the guys and the way we played. That was the best performance I have had since I’ve been manager.”
This point leaves Portsmouth needing two wins from their final two group games to stay in the UEFA Cup.
Kanu put the home side in sight of victory with the second goal after Younes Kaboul had headed the first.
Nigerian striker Kanu said: “I don’t know how it happened but sometimes in football you don’t get what you deserve.”
Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted his side were lucky.
He said: “Ronaldinho made a difference after coming on because he opened up the game with an excellent free-kick.”
