Can I kick it? Robinho has adapted easily to the rough tactics of the Premier League since joining Manchester City from Real Madrid.
Robinho has become an instant crowd favourite at the City of Manchester Stadium despite the club’s disappointing run that has left them perilously close to the relegation places.
Fears were raised over the ability of a slight Brazilian to handle the rough and tumble of the English game but Robinho has taken the knocks and continued to come back for more, even though he was surprised that referees do not afford creative players greater protection.
“English football is played at dizzying speed. I have got used to the cold but it is more difficult to play when it is raining,” said Robinho. “I thought I would find it harder to adapt than I have. But I haven’t got used to the kickings I’ve taken! When I first came over I was surprised the referees did not even blow for a foul when I was kicked in animalistic style. It was truly unbelievable. “But I am playing well despite being kicked so much and I have scored nine goals.”
Robinho has also been impressed with the passion within English football grounds. “I have more or less learned English and I am getting better. I can understand the fans well as I listen to hip-hop but speaking English well is a bit more difficult.
“The atmosphere in the stadiums is magnificent. Supporters in Spain are more like theatre-goers while over here people celebrate when we win a corner almost as much as when we score a goal.”
