Arsenal are preparing a club record £20million bid for Russia forward Andrei Arshavin in a dramatic move to bolster their squad this January.
Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is breaking his habit of holding back transfer cash and Arshavin, the Zenit St Petersburg front man who was at the club's London Colney training ground last week, is expected to join early next month.
Tottenham were close to landing the Euro 2008 star last summer and still hold out hope of securing him.
But the involvement of their north London rivals means they are unlikely to get their man, and that will come as a bitter blow to Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who had the opportunity to sign Arshavin in August.
Wenger looks likely to spend money after years of being frugal in the transfer market and emphasising the importance of Arsenal developing their own young talent.
Danny Fiszman, the largest shareholder in Arsenal and the driving force of the club, has cleared Wenger to spend the money on the basis of the £37m profit the club made last year.
ltr flop....i dont think he is worth that kind of money
i think arshavin will fit nicely sia
finally arsenal is ready to splurge
merry xmas !
Arsenal are seriously worried that they could lose that 4th spot... That 4th place could be worth anything from $20m to $70m...
somehow i dun feel he is worthy of that 20mill...later flop how?
to me, his value should be around 15-18m.
and i think he will fit in nicely to arsenal.
he's good.
Now that fabregas is injured, i'd rather arsenal spend that amount of money on a central midfielder instead... i'd love to have an asian player like gamba's yasuhito endo playing for the gunners ![]()

i think asharvin is good playing behind van and ade.
asharvin can also be deploy as creative midfielder to temperaily take over fab.

Arsene Wenger would not be drawn to comment on reported interest in Andrei Arshavin, but did suggest Arsenal could raid the market to compensate for the loss of Cesc Fabregas.
Arsenal were dealt a crushing blow on Tuesday with confirmation captain Fabregas will likely be sidelined for four months with a knee injury.
Fabregas’ absence leaves Wenger with a huge void to fill, as he looks to claim a place in the top four let alone sustain a title challenge.
Arshavin has been strongly linked in recent days and the Russian schemer is desperate to secure a move away from Zenit St Petersburg.
Wenger would not be drawn to comment on the Russian, but suggested there could be arrivals in January.
Responding to a direct question about Arshavin, Wenger said: “At the moment nobody is going out and nobody is coming in.”
Wenger did concede that he could be persuaded to open his chequebook.
He said: “More likely yes, but we have internal solutions. We are not desperate because of that (Fabregas’ injury).
”In a way it is more important to focus on the games before January.”
